CLEAN AND READY FOR ADOPTION
Las Vegas – Veterinary Technician Students at Pima Medical Institute Help at Dog Wash
Campaigns may be getting dirtier, but the animals at the Lied Animal Shelter, 655 N. Mojave Road will be cleaner thanks to Veterinary Technician students at Pima Medical Institute, 3333 E. Flamingo Road.
Students and faculty of the Las Vegas career college will conduct a dog wash and will bathe, trim and clean the ears of any animal adopted at the shelter from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 21st. The event is coordinated by Kristen Gillan, veterinary clinical director and Dennis Lopez, veterinary technician program director for PMI. Both Gillan and Lopez have been actively involved with the career college’s partnership with the Animal Foundation and Lied Animal Shelter.
“It is a sad fact that there are too many abandoned animals that need loving homes,” said Lopez. “Having our students and faculty volunteer to do a little extra grooming to get the newly adopted pet off to a clean start is definitely a step in the right direction.”
PMI’s Veterinary Technician students train at the shelter and learn nursing techniques utilizing live animals that are scheduled for surgery and vaccination as part of the ongoing spay and neuter program at the shelter. PMI, in turn, provides nursing care for many shelter animals with blood work, radiography, microbiology, and proper pre- and post-surgical care. Neither entity charges for their services.
PMI’s Veterinary Technician program is a 63 credit-hour program offering an Occupational Associate Degree and allows the students to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). The Vet Tech program, accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and meeting the high standards for veterinary nursing education, is an 18-month, competency-based program. Students receive academic training with ample opportunity for the student to demonstrate hands-on nursing skills with live animals in both small and large animal medicine.
PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training at medical facilities that mirror the working environment they will pursue after graduation.
PMI has been serving students since 1972, with campuses in: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mesa and Tucson, AZ; Denver and Colorado Springs, CO; Seattle and Renton, WA; Las Vegas, NV and Chula Vista, CA. Additional information is available at http://www.pmi.edu or by calling 1-888-442-5998.
